Cancer and Cancer Preveilance

Cancer is a group of diseases that cause cells in the body to grow out of control. Cancer can develop in any organ or tissue and can be life-threatening. There are many different types of cancer, and each type is treated differently.

According to The Facts & Figures annual report, in the United States, there will be 609,360 cancer deaths and an estimated 1.9 million new cancer cases in 2022. With this data at hand, we could stress more how important cancer awareness is.

Most Common Types of Cancer

There are more than 100 types of cancer, but the four most common types the following:

  • Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women, and it typically occurs in the milk-producing ducts of the breasts. Women over 50 are at the greatest risk of developing breast cancer, but the disease can occur at any age. Symptoms of breast cancer include changes in the size or shape of the breasts, dimpling of the skin, nipple discharge, and swelling in the armpit.

  • Lung and bronchus cancer is the second most common type of cancer in both men and women, and it is caused by smoking in about 90% of cases.

  • Prostate cancer is the third most common type of cancer among men, and it occurs when abnormal cells grow in the prostate gland.

  • Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common type overall, but it is the third most common type among men and women combined.

Cancer can be a frightening diagnosis, but treatment options have come a long way in recent years. If you experience any symptoms associated with cancer, be sure to see your doctor immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment options.

General Symptoms of Cancer

There are many different types of cancer, so symptoms will vary depending on the type. However, some general symptoms can occur with any kind of cancer.

- Unexplained weight loss or fatigue

- Pain that does not go away

- Changes in appetite or bowel habits

- Unexplained bleeding or bruising

- Lumps or masses

- Skin changes, such as a new mole or a change in an existing mole

Early Detection and Prevention

Early detection and prevention are crucial to survivorship. Cancer screenings save lives by detecting precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer or by finding cancer early when it is most treatable.

Screenings can find breast, cervical, colorectal, and skin cancers early. Patients with a family history of cancer or genetic predisposition should speak with their healthcare provider about when to start screening and what tests are right for them.

People who do not have a family history of cancer or genetic predisposition should still get screened according to age and gender guidelines. Cancer prevention involves reducing your risk of developing cancer.

Risk Reduction

There are lifestyle changes and steps that can lower your risk of cancer:

  • Healthy lifestyle practices like eating a nutritious diet.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly.
  • Avoiding tobacco products.
  • Getting vaccinated against certain viruses like HPV.
  • Getting regular screenings as recommended.
  • Avoiding known cancer-causing agents such as sunlight, ionizing radiation, chemicals, and certain viruses.

Making healthy choices is the best way to reduce your risk of cancer. But even if you do everything right, cancer can still develop. That's why it's essential to get screened regularly and have a doctor you trust who can help you make informed decisions about your health.

CBD and Cancer

CBD is one of many compounds found in the cannabis plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not produce a psychoactive effect. CBD oil is extracted from the hemp plant, a variety of cannabis plants. The extraction process removes CBD from the plant material and then suspends it in oil, usually coconut or hemp seed oil.

Online communities have claimed that CBD can cure cancer and promote as an alternative treatment. However, research on CBD and its application in cancer treatment is scant. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation found that CBD may help to prevent the spread of aggressive breast cancer cells in mice. However, the authors say that more research is needed to determine whether CBD can effectively treat cancer in humans.

CBD is generally considered safe, but some people may experience side effects, such as fatigue, diarrhea, and changes in appetite. Cancer patients should talk to their doctor before using CBD, as it may interact with other medications. Additionally, CBD products are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), so choosing a reputable brand is essential. The FDA also does not currently approve CBD as a cancer treatment.

Research About CBD and Cancer

While CBD is known to offer a variety of potential health benefits, its role in the treatment of cancer is still being studied. Researchers are exploring whether CBD can help lessen some of cancer's negative side effects and its treatment, such as pain, nausea, insomnia, and anxiety.

Additionally, other researchers are looking at whether CBD would be able to inhibit or stop the spread of cancer. However, no significant studies have been conducted to date that supports CBD's use in cancer treatment.

Most studies examining CBD's potential as a cancer treatment have involved lab-grown mice or human cells. For instance, several research has demonstrated that CBD prevents the development of cancer cells in mice that have lung or colon cancer. Therefore, more research is needed to determine whether CBD is an effective treatment for cancer in humans.

Stand up to cancer day

Stand Up on Cancer

September 9 is Stand Up to Cancer Day, and it's a day when we can all come together to support those suffering from this disease.

As many as one in three people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime. Though there are over 100 types of cancer, which makes finding a cure difficult, cancer charities continue to raise awareness and funds to support research efforts.

The fight against cancer is also expensive; in 2018, $150.8 billion was spent on cancer care in the U.S. alone. And though great strides have been made in early detection and treatment, cancer cells can manifest from anywhere in the body, making it a complex disease to stamp out completely.

However, data show that there's been a decline in the cancer death rate since 1990, thanks in part to better screening and treatment options as well as increased awareness about healthy lifestyle choices that can help prevent cancer.

So this September 9, let's Stand Up to Cancer and do our part to support those battling this disease. By becoming aware of these facts, we can stand up for those suffering from the disease.
